Three Kansas City Current Players Called to National Team Duty

Kansas City Current midfielders Sam Mewis (USA), Desiree Scott (Canada) and Victoria Pickett (Canada) have been called up to their respective national teams for April friendly matches.

Mewis is one of 23 players invited by U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Vlatko Andonovski for two April friendly matches against Uzbekistan.

After traveling to Rio de Janeiro as an alternate for the 2016 Olympics, Mewis played in every match for the U.S. in 2017 and was a member of the 2019 FIFA World Cup Champion team in France. Mewis appeared in eight of the nine U.S. games in 2020 and was named the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year. She has 24 goals for the United States in 83 appearances..

In the first-ever matches between the USA and Uzbekistan, the teams will meet on Saturday, April 9 at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio (4:30 p.m. CT on FOX and Univision Networks) and then again on Tuesday, April 12 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa. (6 p.m. CT on ESPN2 and Univision Networks).

Andonovski will select 18 players to suit up for each of the two matches. Seventeen of the 23 players on this roster helped the USA win the 2022 SheBelieves Cup in February.

Scott is one of the most experienced players on Canada’s roster with 173 appearances at the senior level. Known as ‘The Destroyer’, Scott is a three-time Olympic medal winner, taking Bronze in 2012 and 2016 and Gold in 2020.

Pickett is one of the newest members of Canada’s senior roster, after making many appearances for the youth teams, including the 2014 U-20 FIFA World Cup. Pickett made her senior debut and earned her first start against Mexico on November 27, 2021.

The two-match west coast series continues Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team Celebration Tour, with the first match on Friday April 8 at BC Place in Vancouver and the second match on Monday April 11 at Langford’s Starlight Stadium on Vancouver Island. Both games kick off at 9:30 p.m. CT.
