KANSAS CITY (Jan. 13, 2021) – Kansas City NWSL’s inaugural season preparation continues with tonight’s 2021 NWSL Draft. Head Coach Huw Williams and his staff will convene with team owners at the Compass Minerals National Performance Center as they select players to help complete the club roster.
The 2021 NWSL Draft begins at 6:00 p.m. CT and will broadcast live exclusively on the NWSL’s Twitch channel. Kansas City fans can also follow the team on social media platforms (@KCWoSo) for live updates throughout the night.
Kansas City begins the draft with five overall selections: two in the second round (Nos. 15, 16, 17), plus two additional picks in the fourth round (Nos. 36, 38). KC currently has no picks in the first or third rounds.
This will be Williams’ first draft as the head coach of an NWSL team, but he has deep experience in the draft process. He was one of the architects of the FC Kansas City teams that won back-to-back NWSL Championships, drafting future stars like 2013 Rookie of the Year Erika Tymrak and 2020 Challenge Cup Championship Game MVP Shea Groom.
On Tuesday, the NWSL released a list of players who have registered for the draft. However, the NWSL Board of Governors previously voted to expand the pool of eligible registrants by waiving the registration requirement for any “senior” who has exhausted three years of eligibility at an NCAA or NAIA institution.
