Kansas City NWSL Visits League Leading Orlando Pride

KANSAS CITY (May 29, 2021) — Kansas City NWSL’s stretch of three games in eight days concludes on Sunday, as the expansion side visits the Orlando Pride. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. CT. Kansas City (0-1-2) looks to rebound after suffering its first loss of the regular season in a 2-0 defeat to the Chicago Red Stars on Wednesday. The Pride (2-0-1) look to maintain their unblemished regular season record following a 2-1 victory over the Portland Thorns on Wednesday. 

KANSAS CITY COMFORTABLE ON THE ROAD 

Kansas City’s run of form in all competitions thus far shows that it won’t be intimidated by the prospect of visiting the NWSL’s best side in Orlando. Including the 2021 Challenge Cup, Kansas City boasts an 0-1-3 record away from home. Kansas City’s offense seems to be far more prolific on the road, as the team has scored five goals on the road in all competitions.

Positive away results haven’t been a fluke, either. In its regular-season opener, Kansas City played to a scoreless draw with a Racing Louisville side that currently sits third in the NWSL table. Last Sunday, Kansas City overcame a second-half red card and scored a stoppage time equalizer to steal a point against Houston. Head coach Huw Williams’ side is clearly a dangerous road foe, and there’s enough evidence to believe that Kansas City will start strong on Sunday. 

PLAYERS TO WATCH 
Kansas City NWSL: Defender Rachel Corsie – As Kansas City’s roster has seen a lot of change throughout the 2021 Challenge Cup and Regular Season, one constant has been Rachel Corsie. The Scottish National Team Captain has started every game in all competitions for Kansas City and has been a calming influence on a young team. 

Orlando Pride: Forward Alex Morgan — The NWSL’s leading scorer added to her tally in Wednesday night’s 2-1 victory over the Portland Thorns, drilling an impressive half-volley in the first half to open the scoring. The goal marked Morgan’s third of the season. The 31-year-old looks to be rounding back into form following a knee injury and the birth of her daughter in 2020, and she’s an integral part of a Pride attack that features several recognizable faces.

ORLANDO’S ROSTER LITTERED WITH FAMILIAR FACES 
In addition to Morgan, one of the most prolific scoring players in U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) history, Orlando’s roster features plenty of other star power. Accompanying Morgan up top is fellow USWNT standout and former FC Kansas City forward Sydney Leroux. Leroux has two goals for the Pride this season and scored the game-winning goal in Wednesday’s match against Portland.  

Brazilian international Marta features in Orlando’s midfield. She, along with Morgan, are one of only four active female players with more than 100 international goals. Marta is widely regarded as one of the best players in the history of women’s soccer, and despite not getting on the scoresheet yet in the regular season, she provides a deadly compliment to Morgan and Leroux.  

In addition to Leroux, Kansas City fans will recognize midfielders Gunny Jónsdóttir and Erika Tymrak. Jónsdóttir was originally part of the Kansas City roster that was transferred from Utah, but she was sent to Orlando via trade prior to the preseason. Tymrak began her professional career in Kansas City and was the NWSL’s first Rookie of the Year winner in 2013.
