The Kansas City Current announced today that tenth overall pick from the 2023 NWSL Draft, Alexa Spaanstra, has signed a contract with the club through the 2024 season. Spaanstra is the second of Kansas City’s two first-round picks from this year.
“Alexa is an exciting talent that impressed us at the collegiate level and has continued to do so through the start of preseason,” said general manager Camille Levin Ashton. “We are thrilled to have her with us in KC as she begins her professional career.”

Spaanstra comes to Kansas City from the University of Virginia, where she starred from 2018 through 2022. Starting her career on the right foot, she led the team in goals (9) and assists (6) her freshman year, on the way to 37 career goals and 34 assists for the Cavaliers. During her collegiate career Spaanstra earned All ACC Third team (2018), Second team (2019, 2022) and First team honors (2021). She was also named to the ACC Championship All-Tournament team three times.
Internationally, Spaanstra has represented the United States in tournaments across the world, traveling with the U.S. National Team at the U17, U20 and U23 levels.
