Kansas City Current goalkeeper AD Franch named National Women’s Soccer League Player of the Week

Goalkeeper Adrianna ‘AD’ Franch has been named the Week Ten Budweiser NWSL Player of the Week following the Kansas City Current’s 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit on July 10. This is the first Player of the Week award for Franch since joining the club in 2021.

Sunday’s win was Franch’s second clean sheet of the season and helped the club extend its unbeaten streak to six games (4 wins, 2 draws). The veteran goalkeeper had three saves in the match, but none more crucial than her penalty save in second half extra time.

With Kansas City holding onto a one goal lead in extra time, the referee signaled a penalty kick against the Current. Franch dove to her right and perfectly swatted the shot away from the net before pouncing on the ball.

“AD has been fantastic for us all season long, and today just gave her that moment that she truly deserves,” said head coach Matt Potter in his post-game comments. “She’s led on a day-to-day basis in the manner that she goes about being AD, whether it be a mother, whether it be at training, whether it be as a team member and now as a performer. When that moment came, we have high expectations for her, and she lived up to those expectations, or in a sense lived into the expectations that we have for her because she’s that good.”

Franch and her Current teammates return home this Sunday, July 17 to host OL Reign at 6 p.m. CT. Tickets are available for all matches at Children’s Mercy Park online at KansasCityCurrent.com.
