Kansas City Current forward Alexa Spaanstra named September/October Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally

The National Women’s Soccer League today announced Kansas City Current forward Alexa Spaanstra has been named the NWSL Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally, for September and October.  

This is the first NWSL award for the former Virginia Cavalier. Selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft, Spaanstra appeared in 15 games for the Current this season, with five starts. Her growth from the beginning of the season was especially apparent down the stretch of the season as she saw action in the final six games and started the final two.  

Against Chicago October 7, Spaanstra received a quick pass in the Red Stars penalty box in the 22nd minute. Rather than drive towards goal, she recorded her first career assist when she deftly sent a heel pass to midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta who then gave the Current the lead from 10 yards out. A short while later, she converted her first professional goal by dribbling through traffic and sending a hard-driven shot to the far post. 

A week later, Spaanstra got the Current on the board against Gotham by dribbling through two defenders and chipping a perfectly weighted shot over the hands of the opposing goalkeeper and into the back of the net.  

The Rookie of the Month award is voted on by members of the NWSL Media Association and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent.
