The Kansas City Current have added former Sweden U19 National Team coach Caroline Sjöblom to the technical staff. Sjöblom joins Kansas City after serving as the U19 head coach for Sweden.
“We are delighted to welcome Caroline to the technical staff,” said head coach Matt Potter. “She brings a wealth of experience both as a head coach and on the international stage. As we look to build off the success of last season Caroline will be an important and welcome addition."
“Having worked within high performing environments and teams, her experiences (whether training, game management or individual development) will complement the returning staff on a day-today basis. We look forward to Caroline being an integral part of the team as we continue the journey of fulfilling the shared ambition of ownership, players and staff and the Current fan base.”
Sjöblom played professionally in her home country of Finland with Åland United, where she won the Finnish Cup in 2009 and helped her team earn a berth in the UEFA Champion’s League. In 2011 she transferred to Djurgårdens IF in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan (First Division), playing 24 games and guiding the club to the Swedish Cup.
After retiring from playing, Sjöblom moved into the coaching ranks, guiding the Swedish club AIK’s academy team. In 2016 she took over the senior women’s team at Tyresö FF, which played in Sweden’s second division, the Elittan. Under her coaching the team won the division and moved to the Damallsvenskan.
Earning her UEFA PRO Coaching License in 2018, Sjöblom signed on to become the head coach for AIK, which played in the Elittan at the time. In 2020 she coached the team to a record 72 points (24 wins) and a promotion to the Damallsvenskan.
Following her success in the professional ranks, she was appointed the head coach for Sweden’s U19 National Team in 2020. In 2022 Sjöblom guided the U19 team to wins over Germany and England on the way to a third-place finish in the European Championship.
“We are thrilled to welcome Caroline to Kansas City,” said general manager Camille Levin Ashton. “Adding a coach with her knowledge of the international game and the experience in developing talent will be extremely valuable to the club. Caroline is another important addition we’ve been able to make as we pursue a NWSL Championship for this city.”
