KANSAS CITY (Nov. 7, 2026) — The No. 4 seed Kansas City Current (16-9-5, 53 pts., 4th place) opened the postseason in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon at CPKC Stadium, taking down No. 5 seed Angel City FC (15-8-7, 52 pts., 5th place) 1-0 after extra time. After the match entered the 30-minute extra period scoreless, forward Michelle Cooper fired Kansas City ahead from the penalty spot in the 96th minute following a foul committed inside the 18-yard box by Angel City. The Current withstood pressure from the visitors throughout the remainder of the contest but ultimately saw the match out through 120 minutes to take home a one-goal victory.
Saturday’s win sends Kansas City to the semifinal round of the 2026 NWSL Playoffs, presented by Google Pixel, for the third time in franchise history. The Current will face the winner of tomorrow’s quarterfinal match between No. 1 seed Gotham FC and No. 8 Seattle Reign FC.
“It’s another example of finding different ways to win games,” said head coach Chris Armas. “The players met the demands of such a tough, gritty game against a team that you can argue was the hottest in the league. Our team was up for it. The players talked about... whatever it was going to take. They were going to will it to happen. Just really proud to be part of the group, and we're hungry for more."
Momentum fluctuated throughout Saturday’s high-stakes postseason match, with key scoring chances peppered throughout the contest. Defender Laney Rouse nearly broke the deadlock in the sixth minute, firing a strike from distance that seemed destined to dip below the crossbar, but the effort stayed just high of goal. Forward Temwa Chawinga met a lobbed ball in behind the visitors’ defense in the 19th minute, but her header went straight into the hands of Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson.
Angel City midfielder Ary Borges fizzed a shot on target in the 25th minute for the visitors’ best chance of the opening stanza, but Kansas City goalkeeper Lorena leapt to tap the effort over the crossbar. Both sides threatened on set pieces — and Angel City on long throw-ins — during the opening 45 minutes, but the match entered halftime level.
Kansas City nearly broke the scoreless tie on multiple occasions as the second half wore on. Following a well-worked team move in the 70th minute, forward Haley Hopkins laid a ball back for midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta to strike. LaBonta’s curled, left-footed effort was tracking toward goal but ultimately sailed just high. Ten minutes later, midfielder Croix Bethune curled a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that Anderson snared.
Anderson’s fifth save of regulation came on a well-struck effort from midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo, but the Angel City goalkeeper was up to the task. After nine minutes of second-half stoppage time, the match entered a 30-minute extra time period knotted at zero.
Kansas City immediately stepped out on the front foot in extra time with a flurry of early scoring opportunities. After an effort from Chawinga was blocked and sent out of play, the Current was awarded a corner kick. Defender Izzy Rodriguez set a dangerous in-swinging cross inside the six-yard box, where an Angel City player committed a foul as Current defender Kayla Sharples attempted to meet the ball.
The referee awarded a penalty kick to Kansas City, which Cooper stepped up to take. She confidently fired Current ahead, fizzing a chest-high strike past a diving Anderson and into the left side of the goal. The goal — which came in the 96th minute — marked Cooper’s first career postseason goal in her third-ever postseason appearance.
Kansas City kept the visitors off the scoresheet for the remainder of the first 15-minute period, taking a 1-0 lead into the second half of extra time. That scoreline held as the final whistle sounded, as the Current withstood Angel City pressure to earn a gritty 1-0 victory after 120 minutes of play.
The win marked Kansas City’s second-ever postseason victory at CPKC Stadium, and the Current will now advance to the semifinal round for the third time in franchise history. The Current will face the winner of Sunday’s match between Gotham and Seattle, at a to-be-announced date, location and time on either Saturday, Nov. 14 or Sunday, Nov. 15.
LaBonta made her seventh career postseason appearance and start for Kansas City on Saturday — setting a new franchise record for most playoff appearances and starts. Rodriguez made her sixth career postseason appearance in the match, the second-highest total in franchise history.
LaBonta also surpassed Hailie Mace for the most postseason minutes played in Current franchise history, as her total now stands at 640 following Saturday’s contest. The previous mark of 570 was surpassed by LaBonta in the 51st minute of the match. DiBernardo made her 13th career postseason start, tied with Lynn Biyendolo for the second-most in NWSL history.
Two rookies made their first-ever postseason appearance in Saturday’s contest. Defender Laney Rouse started and played 119 minutes of Saturday’s quarterfinal, and she was replaced by fellow rookie defender Itala Gemelli. Lorena made two saves in Saturday’s shutout, the first of her postseason career and the third postseason shutout in franchise history.
