Match Preview: Kansas City Current Starts September at Bay FC

KANSAS CITY (Sept. 3, 2026) – To open its September slate, the Kansas City Current (10-8-4, 7th place, 34 pts.) treks to the West Coast on Friday, Sept. 4, to face Bay FC for the first time this season. The match, which is the first of three straight Friday night games for the Current, kicks off at 9 p.m. CT (7 p.m. PT) at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif. 

The match will broadcast nationally on Prime Video with Mike Watts and Lori Lindsey on the call as well as on the World Feed with Jacqui Oatley and Kika Toulouse. Jillian Carroll Letrinko and Erik Bergrud will be over the air on 90.9 The Bridge, and the game will also be available on the KC Current App in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

TEN THINGS TO KNOW

1. Kansas City has won each of its first four meetings with Bay FC by a combined score of 12-3. 

2. The last meeting between the two sides was Sept. 6, 2025, which saw the Current post a 2-0 win in San Jose. Forward Michelle Cooper scored in the 45th minute before forward Temwa Chawinga provided an insurance goal in the second minute of second-half stoppage time.

3. Chawinga has scored five goals in four career regular season meetings with Bay FC, finding the net at least once in all four. The only player to score a goal in each of her first five regular season matches against a single opponent is Alex Morgan vs. Washington from 2013-15.

4. Kansas City posted a 3-2 win over North Carolina last weekend for their 10th win of the regular season. The Current became the sixth club in NWSL history to record double-digit wins in three or more consecutive regular seasons.

5. Forward Haley Hopkins registered the first multi-assist game of her career on Aug. 29, becoming the seventh player in club history to do so in the regular season. She has five goals and three assists so far this year after totaling five goals and five assists in her first three professional seasons combined. 

6. Midfielder Croix Bethune is currently tied for second in the league with nine assists. Only three players in NWSL history have recorded 10 assists in a single regular season: Tobin Heath (Portland, 2016), Bethune (Washington, 2024) and Cloé Lacasse (Utah, 2026). 

7. Bethune (No. 2) and forward Temwa Chawinga (No. 7) were ranked in ESPN’s Top 25 NWSL Players rankings earlier this month. Additionally, Kansas City checked in at No. 11 in Opta’s recent Women’s Global Club Power Rankings.

8. Defender Katie Scott is with the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team at the 2026 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland from Sept. 5-27. She is one of eight NWSL players on the roster. The USA starts their World Cup campaign on Sept. 6 vs. Italy. 

9. Defender Izzy Rodriguez won the Fan Impact Challenge for the 2026 NWSL Lauren Holiday Impact Award, presented by Nationwide. Nationwide will make a $10,000 donation to EarlystART, Rodriguez’s community partner, in honor of her winning the fan vote.   

10. The KC Current recently signed defender Maëva Nyadjou, who helped Cameroon win the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), through the 2029 season. Nyadjou was named WAFCON Best Young Player and was selected to the WAFCON Best XI.
